Now where do i even begin with this wedding?
I could start way back early last year when i first met them for the very first time over coffee. It was a weekday evening after work, and understandably they were visibly tired. Not for me – I was swelling with excitement, like how I usually was when I receive an email detailing how they visualized their big day: “Think evening garden solemnization in the evening sun, super casual vibe for dinner over picnic tables, fringe events for our guests, and maybe beanbags over the lawn for people to chill out.”
Once we got to know each other a little bit more, they started to get more engaged in the conversation, and soon we were animatedly sharing our visions on how that day would be, and what stories they shared as a pair. It promised to be a hell of a ride.
And what a ride it was. What materialized on that day was perhaps an epitome of what a wedding would be to me. Raffles House at Fort Canning Hill had a makeover so intensive that it was unrecognisable from the simple colonial-looking hut it was. The inner child in me rejoiced when I saw the lawn turn into a big picnic area, complete with beanbags, crates for tables, colorful mats, and quirky pom poms and lanterns to reflect the fun-loving characters of Ben and Elaine. Everyone’s needs were well taken care of – repellent to ward the mozzies away, slippers to get comfy on the grass, and paper fans to calm their overly-excitedly spirits down. To keep everyone occupied, there was a bathtub full of drinks (easily converted into a DIY cocktail bar), giant Jenga blocks, and even a skateboard (she’s a mean skateboarder). Heck, there was even a bouncing castle for adults to let loose in.
Yes, a freaking BOUNCY CASTLE, folks.
It is easy to see why their “wedding festival” was such a people-centric affair – To them, nothing is more important than this motley crew (a large one, if i may add) that was gathered here on this special evening, and their prime concern was to make sure it was a fun day for everyone who attended. You can leave all your prim-ness and proper-ness right at home, thank you very much – You are here to have a truckload of fun.
And for me, as a wedding photographer – but really, an observer of people, a documenter of life, a coincidental partaker of joyous occasions – it doesn’t get better than this.
This unforgettable day wouldn’t be possible without these folks here:
